A contingency fee is paid only out of money recovered for you. A recovery is the money an insurer or another party actually pays you, through a settlement or a court judgment. It is not the value your claim might have on paper.<\/p>\n

You don’t pay this fee by the hour, and you don’t pay it at the start of the case. If there is no recovery, no attorney fee is owed under this arrangement. Court costs and case expenses are separate, and they may still be owed, as explained in the next section.<\/p>\n

Your written fee agreement sets the exact percentage and the order of deductions. Read it before you sign. Ask questions until every term makes sense to you.<\/p>\n

Any settlement or award is reduced by more than medical bills and liens: the attorney fee and any repaid court costs and case expenses also come out of it, so the amount you receive is what remains after all of these deductions.<\/p>\n
