If you’re asking, “Do I need to go to the ER after a car accident in Georgia?”, the safest answer is to get checked whenever something feels wrong. Don’t wait to see how you feel tomorrow.

No single rule fits every crash. A low-speed impact can still hurt someone. A bump in a parking lot can leave a person with a stiff neck, a headache, or a head injury they didn’t notice at first. Shock can hide pain for a while, so how you feel at the scene isn’t the whole picture.

This page is general information, not medical advice. A doctor makes diagnoses. Your first job is to get checked. Legal questions can wait until you’re safe and have been seen.

Attorney Terance Madden has been in practice since 1999. Waiting to see whether symptoms get worse is a risk you don’t need to take.

If someone is hard to wake or is struggling to breathe, call 911. Don’t drive that person yourself. If you suspect a neck or back injury, don’t move the person unless staying where they are puts them in danger.

When Urgent Care or Your Own Doctor May Be Enough

Urgent care or your own doctor may be enough for minor complaints, such as stiffness, mild bruising, or small cuts. Urgent care can treat many everyday injuries. It isn’t built for serious trauma. If you have any warning sign from the list above, skip urgent care and go to the ER.

Even when urgent care is the right choice, try to get seen the same day. If you can’t, get seen the next day, and go sooner if new symptoms appear. Ask the provider whether you should come back, and write down the date of any follow-up.

Tell the provider exactly how the crash happened and where you hurt. Describe your pain plainly, including the spots you think are minor. A common mistake is saying “I’m fine” when you aren’t sure yet. A doctor who knows the full story can record your injuries more accurately.

Why Delayed Symptoms Are Common and Why Same-Day Evaluation Matters

Many people feel fine at the scene and notice pain later. That’s why a same-day check matters, even when symptoms seem small. Adrenaline and shock can mask pain in the first hours after a crash. Neck pain, back stiffness, and headaches may show up after that.

Concussion symptoms are easy to miss. Feeling foggy, tired, sensitive to light, or unable to concentrate can seem like stress or bad sleep. Treat them as possible injuries and tell a doctor about each one.

See a doctor even if your symptoms seem minor. Write down each new symptom when it starts, with the date and time. Note what you were doing when it began.

Waiting weeks before treatment carries a cost. A long gap can give others a reason to question whether the crash caused the injury. Prompt, documented care protects your health and your record.

Calling 911 at the Scene: What Dispatch Can Do

Calling 911 brings police and medical help to the scene. It also starts an official record of the crash. Tell the dispatcher your exact location, how many people were hurt, and whether anyone is trapped, bleeding, or unresponsive.

Stick to facts when the officer arrives. Describe where you were, what you saw, and what you felt. Don’t guess about speed, distance, or who caused the crash. A guess can end up in the report and be hard to correct later.

Before you leave, ask for the report number and the responding officer’s name. Write them down with the time and place. A police report can help later when the facts of the crash are reviewed.

If you aren’t sure whether to call, call. A quick call costs little, while a delay can cost much more.

Documenting Your Injuries, Treatment, and Lost Time

Keep a record of every visit, bill, and prescription, starting with your first ER or urgent care stop. Save discharge papers, follow-up notes, and receipts. Note any appointments you missed, too.

Keep a daily journal of your pain, sleep, work limits, and the activities you can no longer do. Short notes each day are easier to trust than a summary written weeks later.

Photograph the vehicle damage, any visible injuries, and the scene when it’s safe to do so. Missed work should be shown with pay stubs or a letter from your employer or doctor.

For claims governed by Georgia’s 2025 tort-reform law, medical expense claims are limited to the reasonable value of medically necessary care. Under O.C.G.A. § 51-12-1.1, the amount is decided by the trier of fact, meaning the judge or jury hearing the case. If a provider treats you under a letter of protection, Georgia law makes the letter, itemized charges, and referral source relevant, under § 51-12-1.1(d). An adjuster from the other driver’s insurer may call early, often before you know how badly you’re hurt.

Be factual and brief. Avoid guessing about speed, fault, or distance. Don’t say you feel fine if you don’t know yet. Don’t sign medical release forms until you understand what they allow.

Georgia uses modified comparative fault, which means shared fault (O.C.G.A. § 51-12-33).
